Operating three sugar mills located in close proximity to the tropical city of Mackay, Mackay Sugar is Australia’s second largest sugar milling company realising an annual turnover in excess of $300 million.  Mackay Sugar is currently constructing a $120 million Cogeneration Plant at the Racecourse site, which is just one of many exciting renewable energy projects set to grow the future of their business and their people.

An excellent opportunity is currently available for a hands-on and versatile supervisor who has the capacity to be responsible for the maintenance and construction of Mackay Sugar’s bridges, culverts, road crossings and associated structures. Mackay Sugar’s Cane Rail network consists of 850 kilometres of track and associated infrastructure, including five kilometres of bridges.

Reporting directly to the Cane Supply Superintendent, this critical autonomous role involves being responsible for overseeing efficient execution of maintenance work on a wide range of cane rail structures by providing scoped maintenance work plans, schedules and arranging all the necessary resources required to complete.

The role involves leading a small workforce of up to 15 during the maintenance season, when the majority of major upgrading and maintenance is carried out. Contributing to the development of maintenance strategies, identifying assets which need replacement or upgrading and overseeing capital projects all form an important part of this critical role.

Key Position Requirements:

  • A proven track record supervising and co-ordinating maintenance and upgrading work associated with civil structures, in particular timber and concrete bridges
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of up to date Health, Safety & Environment requirements applicable to heavy industrial operations
  • Excellent communication skills including the ability to effectively lead a small workforce engaged in maintenance and upgrading activities
  • Sound organisational and time management skills including the ability to manage multi projects simultaneously
  • Proficiency with the MS Office suite and Computerised Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS)
  • Relevant qualifications in Bridge Carpentry or similar field

Desirable Position Requirements:

  • Relevant experience associated with rail operations and/or rail infrastructure
